“Where are we going again?” Dean asked his younger brother as they made their way into his baby (his Impala, but that isn’t what he calls it).

“Tree Hill, North Carolina.” Sam reminded him. He would have rolled his eyes, or he would have been annoyed to some degree with his asking, but he was in a calm mood. And counting now, Dean had only asked twice.

“Thank God that’s only a few hours away. I’ve still got a headache from when that woman slapped me last night.” Dean told him as he put the keys in the ignition and started to car up. His baby purred beautifully. He knew it, and he smiled.

“After you said that she had a great ass.” Sam said turning his head to him, his eyebrows risen.

Dean smirked as his car slid onto the road. He brought his shoulders a bit up, a small shrug. “So? It’s a pretty nice compliment to get if I do say so myself.”

“Of course you would say that.” Sam responded, turning his head to look out of the window in front of him.

“Hey! Is it a crime that I’m okay with compliments?” Dean asked a bit innocently, knowing that that really wasn’t the case.

“What compliments are to you are sexual harassments to women.” Sam informed him.

“Only to some women.” Dean responded in a knowing tone, though he wasn’t completely sure.

“Only to most women.” Sam once again informed him as he turned his head to look at his older brother.

Dean only looked at him as a response before turning his head to keep his eyes on the road.

“How about this. You don’t hit on anyone while we’re here and I’ll stop bugging you about this.” Sam compromised.

“Seriously? I don’t hit on anyone while we’re here and you’ll stop giving me crap about me hitting on women and how they supposedly don’t like my compliments?” Dean raised an eyebrow. He wasn’t even sure he was hearing right. No, he did, and it sounded like a good compromise. He had self control. Well, to a degree.

Sam rolled his eyes a bit before answering, “Yes.” Truth be told, now that he was compromising this, it’ll be interesting to see if he could actually do it. “Are you up for it?”

Dean had a mental hesitation in answering, but quickly put a smirk on his face. “Absolutely, Sam. Absolutely.”

“Haley. What time is it?” Karen, the owner of Karen’s Café, asked her young, blonde employee who was standing behind the cash register after finishing up with a customer.

Haley checked her thin strapped watch on her wrist. “Six o’clock.”

“Oh.” The older woman let out a soft laugh. “I thought it was seven. It’s been busy here today.”

Haley nodded. “Yeah. And usually on Sundays it slows down a bit.”

“Well, it seems to be slowing down a bit now.” She heard the chimes of someone coming into the café. “Spoke too soon. Do you have this one Haley?”

Haley gave the older woman a smile. “I got it, don’t worry.”

Karen smiled back before walking out of the counter area she was just in with Haley and walking over to a table to take their orders.

Haley looked up at the two men who walked through the doors. She has never seen them around, so they either just moved here or are tourists roaming the town, though she never has any idea why people would be tourists here. Other than to stop and look around while they’re driving towards another location. Yeah, that’s probably the reason. She concluded.

Dean eyed the blonde as he and his brother walked into the café. He was lost in his thoughts of what to say to her once he got there, but he had made that compromise with Sam. He would break it, but it was for his own benefit in the end. Damn.

“May I help you?” Haley asked the two men as they walked to the opposite side of the counter from her.

Dean smiled at her, pulling himself together. Self control. “Yeah. You see, me and my brother are visiting for a bit and decided to come get something to eat.” He told her.

Haley’s heart fluttered a bit at seeing him smile at her, but quickly pushed that feeling away as he spoke. When he finished, her hands reached for two menus that were off the side. “Well, we have food here.” She gave them a smile, which made Dean suck in a breath. “Here are menus.” She handed them menus. “And if you would sit down, I’ll be back in a minute.” And with one last smile toward the brothers, she made her way out of the counter area and to a table to check on another set of customers.

Dean watched her walk away from them as he and Sam took a seat on two of the stools in front of the counter, a few seats from the cash register.

Sam gave waited until he caught Dean’s eye to give him a look.

Dean just glanced over at him, but was now completely looking at him. “What?” He asked, though he surely an idea, but he figured since he didn’t hit on her, that Sam would actually be surprised. So what was with this look he was giving him?

Sam shook his head as he opened the menu in his hands and looked towards it. “Nothing.”

“Seriously, Sam. What?” Dean was just curious, and a little annoyed seeing as how he couldn’t say anything he wanted to say to the blonde waitress.

Sam looked over at him. He almost wanted to laugh, but he didn’t. “You know we’re going to be here for a few days, right?”

Dean nodded, a bit confused, not knowing where he was going with this. “Yeah. So?”

“So that means we’ll be seeing her for a few days. Still want to go through with our agreement?” Sam asked, smiling a bit, as he continued to refrain from laughing at his older brother who kept sneaking glances at the waitress they had seen just moments before.

“Yeah. I do have self control, Sam.” Dean told him looking back down at his menu. He wasn’t completely sure he believed his own words.

Haley made her way back behind the counter in front of the two boys. “Do you two want anything to drink? Water? Coffee?”

“I’ll take a water.” Sam told her.

“I’ll take one too.” Dean spoke.

“Bottle or cup?” Haley asked. She could give water to them in either.

“Bottle.” They both responded, almost simultaneously.

Haley nodded and went to retrieve the bottles. A moment later she came back and put the bottles on the counter in front of the two men. “So, have you two decided what you’d like?”

“Yes. I will take a cheeseburger and fries.” Sam told her, handing her his menu so she could take it.

“I’ll take two cheeseburgers and two orders of fries.” Dean told her, noticing the way her hair fell around her face like a halo, even in the dimmed light illuminating from outside the café.

Haley took out a small sized notepad from a pocket on her waist apron, and a pencil. She wrote down their orders as they spoke. When Dean finished, she looked a bit amused as a smile crossed her features, making her face light up, and Dean didn’t think twice before noticing. “Okay.” She looked up at the two. “I’ll be back with your orders soon.” She caught Dean’s eye for a moment before turning and walking away to give the order to Karen who was back in the kitchen.

“You want to sleep with her, don’t you?” Sam asked knowingly.

Dean shook his head. “No, but there’s just something about her…” He had barely known her, barely spoken to her, and yet he knew she was too good just to be a notch on his bedpost. Actually, it was more like bedposts seeing as how they moved around quite a bit and had different beds every time they did.

Sam chuckled.

Dean looked at him a frowned. “What?” This time he really had no idea.

Sam shook his head. “Nothing. It’s just funny how we just made that agreement, and you actually like a girl for more than sex.” Sam furrowed his eyebrows. “You do know you’ve barely talked to her, right?”

Dean rolled his eyes. “Yes, I do know that. I’m not incompetent.”

“And you just said incompetent right in a sentence.” It seemed like too big a word for Dean, especially to use correctly. “Are you possessed?” He asked, almost whispering.

“No, I am not possessed!” Dean exclaimed, giving him a look before turning to see Haley coming out of the kitchen holding a tray with two plates on them, entering back into the counter area and standing in front of them.

“Okay, here we go guys. One cheeseburger and fries-” Haley put Sam’s plate in front of him. “-and a double order of cheeseburger and fries.” She almost smiled as she put Dean’s slightly larger plate in front of him. “I hope you enjoy your meal.” This time, she did smile.

“Thanks.” Both men responded, again that day, almost simultaneously.

Before Haley could walk away, Dean spoke, “I’m Dean by the way. And this is my brother Sam.”

Haley smiled brightly at him. “I’m Haley. It’s nice to meet you.”

Dean smiled genuinely, right back at her. “It’s nice to meet you too.”

Four days. That how long the Winchester Boys stayed in that small town. All the while Dean had not hit on anyone, more specifically, that beautiful blonde waitress down a the local café, because he didn’t have eyes for anyone else. They had talked (without interruptions. Sam had been talking to a brunette all the while). They both had actual conversations, something Dean did not do with women. They had laughed.

He didn’t tell her exactly why they were there. He told her it was “business.” Which wasn’t a complete lie, and he was glad she didn’t ask more questions about that. He didn’t want to lie to her. Another first for him.

The day he left, Haley felt heartbroken, and so did Dean. Between those four days, a connection had formed between them. Feelings evolved between them. But he had to leave, and he knew he had to, with his brother by his side.

He had hugged her, taking in her scent. Her perfume was cinnamon smelling. He had smelt it from the first time she leaned over to tell him something. Which was the second day he and his brother had been there at that café. That’s why he always ordered French toast at breakfast in the morning, and a peach tasting pie, which has sprinkled cinnamon on it, in the evening.

Cinnamon was her scent. It was her he thought of whenever the smell filled his nostrils or tasted the flavor of cinnamon on a cookie or French toast or that peach tasting pie.

He told her he’d come back. She believed him. And he did come back for her. It was almost one year later. Almost a lifetime a waiting. She had almost given up hope. Almost. But in the end she didn’t, and she was glad. It was worth it. A year was worth it. A lifetime was worth it.

Dean had no longer bedded women within that year. All he did was compare them to Haley (which annoyed Sam after awhile, seeing as how Dean kept telling him).

Four days was all it took. And the remembrance from the cinnamon scent she wore that brought him back to her beautiful face.

This fic is amazing! I love how you preserved the brotherly interactions between Sam and Dean even though it's primarily a Dean/Haley fic.

Gosh, I always get so torn up when Dean has to leave Haley. You did a beautiful job portraying the angst when someone leaves. But of course we got our happy ending with his return.

Great work! Keep it up. I look forward to more from you. :)
